Bishop Bronescombe’s incredible all-girl LEGO League team has made history by winning the Regional LEGO League competition for Cornwall. Competing for the very first time, the team of nine girls travelled to Culdrose and impressed judges and spectators alike by taking home not one, but two awards: the Robot Games title and the Overall Champions award.
The energy and talent on display didn’t go unnoticed. Betsy Harpur, Education Outreach Administrator at TECwomen, was there:
“I had the absolute pleasure of attending both days of LEGO League and witnessing the incredible amount of hard work from every team involved. Bishop Bronescombe stormed the competition! It was fantastic to watch them tackle the Robot Games missions – it showed expert coding and exceptional teamwork from the girls.”
Their achievements mean they’ve now qualified for the National LEGO League Finals in Harrogate this May — an outstanding accomplishment and a chance to showcase their talent on a national stage.
A Big Win for Girls in STEM
This isn’t just a school victory; it’s a powerful moment for girls in STEM. The LEGO League encourages creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving through robotics and coding challenges — areas where girls are still underrepresented. Bishop Bronescombe’s team is helping to change that.
Penny Hermes, a proud mum of one of the team members, shared how the journey began with a spark lit by TECgirls:
“This all girls team came about thanks to Tec Girls! You set the spark in my daughter (one of the team) when she attended a number of your events including the reach for the sky event at Culdrose. This was where we met George Slater who told us about the First Lego League and how to get support from the St Austell and District Soroptimists. Through their support we were able to purchase the kit and enter the competition! So thank you for really inspiring the next generation of Cornish girls!”
Their success proves what’s possible when girls are given the opportunity to explore and lead in science and technology. They’ve worked hard, pushed boundaries, and shown exactly why representation in STEM matters.
TECgirls Founder Caitlin Gould reflected on the bigger picture behind moments like this:
“This is what we are all about and shows how it is all connected. Once you light that spark, girls go on to do amazing things!”
The First of Many
Even more remarkable is the fact that this is Bishop Bronescombe’s first-ever time entering the LEGO League. To make it all the way to the national finals on their debut is an impressive feat and a huge confidence boost for the team — and for the wider school community.
How You Can Support Their Journey
As the team prepares for the national finals, there’s still one big challenge ahead: getting there. The girls are currently fundraising to cover transport and accommodation costs for the trip to Harrogate.
Every donation, no matter the size, will help ensure they can attend and represent Cornwall at the national level.
If you’d like to contribute, please consider donating and sharing their campaign.
